Bhutan Day 1 - Paro, Thimphu

Drukair is Bhutan national airline, the one that depart from Singapore is a A319 airbus. A pretty comfy flight for the 6 hours, it's a full fledged flight that come with meals, drinks and blanket. The flight stopover at Kolkata for around 30 minutes and continue it's journey.
Here's some tips when choosing the seats on the flight.
Request for a seat on the left hand side of the plane when departing for Bhutan.
Request for a seat on the right hand side of the plane when flying out of Bhutan
WHY? Those who have yet to see Mount Everest in your entire life, here is a chance for you to see
it!!

Reaching Paro airport, the cold freezing wind greet us when we left the plane. It was about 2 degree Celsius in the morning and we quickly put on our gloves, scarf and beanies.
The first thing that I notice is the cool fresh air. This really wake me up instantly.

Paro airport has a structure of a modern building mix with traditional wood craving that you will see throughout the whole of Bhutan. Quickly took some photos before going into the immigration. Custom clearance is pretty fast, do remember to have your visa in hand.

After meeting up with our tour guide, we proceed to Thimphu which is the capital of Bhutan. Road is pretty windy and bumpy along the way. But good thing, the road limit is kept at 50km/h throughout Bhutan.

The hotel that we stayed is call KISA hotel, its a pretty decent place. Rooms are spacious, clean and nicely furnish, toilet are well kept with bath tub and hot water. There's LCD TV in the room and most important. It's has free wireless. Hope the rest of the hotel for the next few days will be as good as this.

As I have not done much research on the hotel in Bhutan I didn't expect hotel with such nice facilities. It's gave me a feeling of traditional culture and yet modern city life.

After washing up, our guide brought us to have our first Bhutanese lunch. Rice is the main staple food in Bhutan, the vegetable are cook with cheese which is pretty interesting. Pretty salty for me. But overall the food are superb.

National Memorial Chorten

After lunch we went to our first sightseeing.
This place is National Memorial Chorten which was built by the Queen in memory of her son, the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk (3rd King). There's a white color chorten after entering though the main gate and there are many people walking around this chorten. It is believe that the person will be blessed after walking 3 rounds around the chorten.

Buddha Point

Next we went to visit this super huge Buddha located at Kuensel Phodrang. The 169 feet
bronze statue of Buddha Dordenma , Vajra Throne Buddha which symbolise indestructibility.

Heard it's a investment by Singaporeans and local Bhutanese. As it is still under construction, the big Buddha is still not open to the public. There's a big piece of pure gold embedded on the forehead of the Buddha.

From this top mountain point, we are able to view the entire Thimphu city.

Our handsome tour guide, Kinley.

Thimphu Dzong

Moving on we went to the largest Dzong in Bhutan and it's also the working office for the current King. The Dzong is open 5pm - 6 pm on Monday to Friday, 8 am - 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
During winter, its open on Saturday and Sunday, 8am  -5 pm in winter.

This big Dzong and the area nearby is also the working area for many government bodies.

Now check this out. Saw the long white scarf that my tour guide is wearing?
The local need to wear this when going into places that are meant for the royal, or some place important to show their respect. If someone has contribution to the country or hold some significant position in the country, the King will present a different color. e.g. red to that individual to represent their status. This long white color scarf can be bought at shops in Bhutan

This is something that Bhutan is famous for.
GNHC which stand for Gross National Happiness Commission. This was implemented by the 4th King of Bhutan to promote happiness throughout the country.

Dinner time have come and I ordered one of their local beer, Druk 11000. It's a strong beer with 8% alcohol level. There are quite a few dishes for dinner and I have miss out the photo for meat dish.

Singapore Kin Kin Ban Mian

Have tried this in Malaysia and this is now always available in Singapore. I have posted in one of my post and the noodle was fantastic. When this shop was open in Singapore, there are long queues everyday. Therefore I have waited for the queue to cool down before trying this. I went there on a weekday and there is totally no queue. This shop is located in Macpherson road. Well, it might be a central location but have to walk around 5 mins from MRT station. Menu are available on the wall and you can place order by writing on the form they have provided on the table. I ordered the signature ban mian, can't wait to add in their dry chilli. Ordered their signature fish-ball soup too as according to my friend, this is nice. Serving was fast and in the noodle and fish ball soup are brought in front of us. For me, the noodle is not as nice compare to the one that I had in KL. The noodle is quite hard, it feel as the noodle is not totally cook. This is not ca

Ubin First Stop Restaurant

It was my mum’s birthday and we had an impromptu dinner at Ubin First Stop Restaurant.   Located in Changi Village, it’s a place whereby me and my family go quite often as its pretty laid back and quiet. Such places are hard to find now a days. It isn’t our first time there and it was the pleasant experiences which led to me writing this review. Nothing special to the setting of the place but it makes you feel as if you have returned to kampong days. There’s aircon and non-aircon seating area. Depending on individual preference, we prefer the non-aircon area. The restaurant is pretty spacious, an ideal place for families with kids. Sambal Petai with Prawns The Sambal Petai with prawns is cooked together with ikan bills and onion. The ikan bills add the crunch and with the spiciness of the Sambal, it leaves us satisfied and craving for more. A good dish to go with rice. For those that do not know about Petai. It is also known as 臭豆 (smelly bean) in Chinese as it has this
